It really makes me realize how old I am when I think of my baby boy being 41, it seems like just yesterday that Korey, age two, could not go out trick or treating because his mother was in labor with Travis. What a special Halloween treat Travis was and then 27 years later we received another Halloween treat in Ian, Travis and Kathy's son, and our grandson. Jen and I were both blessed to be there at his birth. Happy Birthday to our two SPECIAL gifts.
The work in Texas is still going very Good, we had the privilege of teaching Joel and Marcia Rodriguez the first temple prep class Tuesday. When we first arrived in Texas they were inactive. Elder Sharp and Elder Smith taught them for quite awhile and we went with them and added the older prospective. Eventually they started coming to church and their son Johnathan was baptized a few months ago and has since received the Aaronic Priesthood.
Marcia was hesitant to talk about the blessing of being sealed in the temple, because of some things that had occurred in her family, all of whom are active and temple recommend holders.
But she has since realized that none of us are perfect and everyone makes mistakes.
As we taught them the other night we could feel the spirit was with us helping us answer their questions and letting them feel of the Savior's Love for them.
Their daughter and older son were both there acting as interpreters for Marcia Her husband Joel speaks english very well. It was easy to see that all who were present could feel the spirit. Now we have to work on the son and daughter and their Catholic spouses. It was a blessing to have them there so they could hear the lesson. I have been learning Spanish and progressing well, but I have a hard time putting the words through my 66 year old mind and keeping up with their very rapid speech!!!
I know the work we are involved in is true, the Lord has blessed us with things to say time and time again.
Hope you all have a Scary, fun Halloween.
Lots of Love...Elder and Sister Carter (aka: Dad and Mom, and Papa and Grammy!!)

Earl & We have been faithfully visiting her three to four times a month. We give her granddaughter a ride to Young Women every week that she wants to go. Angie would tell us that she will go to church maybe next week, this has been going on for months. She has a strong testimony and she faithfully sends in her tithing every month, and is a very spiritual lady. However that first step back to church has been a real tough one for her. A month ago she told us that she did not have any nice clothes to wear to church, of course we told her it did not matter what she wore to church, but Sister Carter found some clothes for her, and eliminated that concern.
So we anxiously called her the following Saturday to ask if we could pick her and her Granddaughter up Sunday morning for church, she said no she did not think so, and that is the way it has been going.
She told us six months ago she felt like we were sent to Texas for her. We told her much later that if that was indeed the case, the Lord expected her to do something about it.
We have been praying for a way to help her and have been getting no results. Earlier in the week Sister Carter had suggested asking her if she didn't have concerns about not taking the Sacrament. The other morning as I was pondering this and trying to think of a way to present this to her and another inactive lady that also has a strong testimony some thoughts went through my head as to the best way to approach her.
When we were visiting her tonight the spirit told me this was the time for action, and I told her that I was concerned about her and this other lady not doing the things that help them grow in the gospel, I explained that they both could be strong leaders in the branch, and they were hampering their own progress by with holding themselves from the Lord's work.
I also told her that when I would sit on the stand with Bishop Folsom and we would see someone in the ward come in that had not been to church for awhile, how great our joy was, and if we felt that way I could just imagine how our Heavenly Father feels when he sees a lost sheep return to the fold.
She sat and thought for a couple of minutes and then she said I am going to make a commitment. I will be in church Sunday. Needless to say our joy was very full at that moment, and we both think she really meant it.

Well, she didn't come. We were pretty discouraged. But, we'll persevere, and visit with her this week and hope for success next Sunday. We've had successes and failures before.

This Saturday at church is the Halloween Party, and the "Trunk or Treat". We're helping the YW decorate the shed outside for the Spook Alley. It will be a good time to take photos of the inactive families....we hear that they all come for the 'Trunk or Treat'!!
We're teaching the "Temple Preparation" class at church. We've got several people ready to go to the temple and we're enjoying the class. It's a trick to do the class (it's after church), and take our riders home....but we're getting it done.
I told this family that we have dinner with every Sunday (and who we REALLY enjoy), the Malone's...that I wasn't sure I wanted to go back to our home ward because it's so big, and it's changed even more while we've been gone, and they don't really NEED us! He asked me, "What's to stop you from coming back, after your mission, and living here?" "Eight things, to start with....Ian, Fiona, Kacey, Kade, Kelby, Liliana, Patrick and Rosann, our grandchildren!!!"
But...there is something wonderful about being needed, and called upon to do just about anything, because they know that we are dependable. Just last Sunday, Sister King, raced into church, handed me (Jennifer) a bunch of papers and asked if I could read them...yes...Well, that's your talk for Sacrament, because I'm not feeling well. OK. The funny part was that both speakers had been mistakenly given the same subject...tithing!! So, as Bro. Hicks was giving his talk, I crossed out of my talk all the quotes that he used in his talk!!! I didn't have too much left!! But, I have a few thoughts about tithing of my own...so all went well!! I have taught more Relief Society classes here than in several years at home. Now, I'm helping the Enrichment Leader, so I'm doing the Enrichment class for November. It is good to be needed. The problem is, we won't be here forever, hopefully others will step up to take our places (we're working on that).
Well, all for now!! Hope all is well with all of you.
Sincerely, Elder and Sister Carter
Texas Houston South Mission

Mission Update Oct. 2009

Dear Friends and Family,
We are doing great!! We are learning and growing and continuing to have wonderful experiences.
Just when I think that "nothing new is going to happen".....(I tend to get bored!!).....Something new DOES happen. We met the nicest man yesterday! We were asked to check on a member who is in a Care Center here....the Senior Missionaries in Victoria were asked to relay this info to us by the man's aunt. We found him at the Avalon Care Center, where our good friend, Stella Malone works. His name is Richard Baker, and he is 47 years old. He was in a motorcycle accident 14 months ago. He wasn't wearing his helmet. He has serious brain damage and will be in a care center for the rest of his life. He is in a wheelchair and cannot walk by himself. His speech has been affected, but he is easy to understand. I asked him, "Have you ever asked yourself, why me?" "Oh, no," he says, "I know why this happened." "I'm not the person I used to be, the Lord wanted me to change my life."
Some days I think about being home again, but, one of the talks in General Conference talked about looking "at the whole scheme of things.....the big picture." And I'm trying to do just that. Our time on this Earth is so short "in the grand scheme of things", so we need to make every moment count.......................and there won't be another mission time for us to learn and grow and have these special experiences, so we need to enjoy every single moment.
We had a flood in our basement at home about two weeks ago when our water heater gave up!!! What wonderful children we have!!! Bekah and Bethany and Luke (with our neighbor Jason helping, too!!) got all our 'stuff' out of the basement as fast as they could, preventing even more damage. This all happened in the middle of the night, with a workday to follow the next day...they got to bed about 4am!! Bethany spent days drying out all the fabric...and they all spent days working on this 'problem'!! All is put back together now...Thanks to our wonderful children..Travis and Mark came over when it was time to put most of it back. Thank you, thank you!!
That's all for now, Sincerely, Elder and Sister Carter, Texas Houston South Mission

Elder Costa

The high light of our week was that we got to go to Houston Saturday morning and listen to Elder Costa. He is in the Presidency of the Seventy.

All the missionaries in the Houston area within one hour of the chapel where he spoke were invited to hear him speak, we were one hour and one minute away so they let us go.

He shared some stories about when he was a mission president, and his conversion story. He is a remarkable man, it is easy to see why he is one of the Lord's elect.

Saturday night we attended the wedding of Johnny Garcia and Carrie Benavidaz. It was a very nice wedding. President Chaka performed his first marriage and you could tell he was a little nervous!

I had been assigned to speak on Sunday about the difference between civil marriages and temple sealing/marriages. So all the time I was thinking about the last words in the ceremony, realizing that at the end of the ceremony that they divorce them with the words(Until death do you part).

We have been teaching a daughter of a member along with her two children, the member has kind of pressured them to listen to the discussions and they are very closeminded about everything for that reason. The member sits there during the discussions and at times they start a conversation that will not allow the spirit to be present. We have decided that we must teach the lessons away from the member, so we can have a chance of having the spirit with us in these lessons. They are pretty closeminded because they are being forced to take the lessons. We have decided we would try one more time without the member present and if their hearts are still hardened to the message we will just tell them that they have to read the Book of Mormon and pray about it, and that is the only way they will receive a witness of the truthfulness of it.

No one likes to be forced, that was Satan's plan. It is a lot easier with someone the Lord has prepared to hear the message.
Otherwise, things are going along quite well, here in Wharton, Texas. We've started a FHE for single's, or for those that want to come. Our first one was on Monday and it went pretty well. We played a game that the Elder's thought of, but I(Jennifer) could NOT catch on to!!! It made for lots of laughs!!!
We had exciting news from home last night...Our water heater broke and a pipe broke, and the basement of our house was flooded!!! Many THANKS to Bekah, Bethany, and Luke and our neighbor Jason who moved everything out of the basement, and called Utah Disaster Clean-up!! We'll keep you all posted. Thank goodness for family!!
All for today...Love to All Elder and Sister Carter

September 9, 2009

We had our first "official" teaching experience yesterday. A member asked her daughter, and two of her daughter's children (teenagers) to listen to the lessons. Then she asked us to teach them instead of the young Elders. We did a good job. I don't think they are "golden contacts" but we commited them to read a chapter in the Book of Mormon, and we'll meet with them next week. I've decided that I admire the young Elders more and more!!! I'd rather work with those that have become inactive, but pretty much believe in the church.....and answer questions, and encourage them to come back to church. It's usually a misunderstanding, or they got their feelings hurt....We are having some success with the inactives!!
Otherwise, our week is going well. The Young Women are making rolled out sugar cookies tonight. The Enrichment meeting last night was fun (we brought some inactives who had a great time), we made "Batter Bread" and Cactus Jelly.
Yesterday was our second interview with the new Mission President. We're liking him more and more all the time.....and to think that he is only 40 years old!! He is an amazing man!! And pretty funny, besides!! He's pretty excited about a training that he and his wife are going to this weekend in Dallas....with M. Russell Ballard. He kept saying that he was pretty nervous about being that close to M. RUSSELL BALLARD. I told him that he would be just fine, and he said, "Yes, but M. RUSSELL BALLARD!!!!"
Anyway, the work and the service is going well. It's started turning into Fall weather...maybe because I decorated the trailer for fall!!!! It's cooler, and it rains for some part, or parts of everyday!!!
All for now. We're in the last half of our mission! We'll be happy to go home, but we will certainly miss the people here, especially some of them!!!!
Sincerely, Elder and Sister Carter

What a Weekend

We started last weekend with a Temple zone conference on Friday, we arrived at the Temple 8:00 am. We did an endowment session and then we had a meeting with the Temple president. President Bradshaw talked to us about the importance of Elijah bringing the sealing power back to the earth.

We then went to lunch and met at 1:20 at a nearby Stake Center for our zone conference. President and Sister Saylin talked to us and then we had training on talking about baptism during the first lesson.

We were invited to have dinner at Brother and Sister Mario and Dalilah Perez home, since we had the Bay City Elders with us and it was on the way home, al l six of us went to dinner. Sister Perez had made a taco feast. We all ate until we were stuffed and then we visited for a few minutes and Elder Schwarz gave a gospel message.

Saturday at 1:00 pm we had two more baptisms; Oscar and Aricili Calderon. They are a young couple that the Elders have been teaching all the time we have been here. They have been ready for baptism for a while but they both worked on Sundays, so they could not come to church. While Elder Cameron was here, he and Elder Schwarz did a role play with them to show them how to ask their bosses for Sunday off, and it worked.

Saturday night we had Stake Conference, so we picked up Johnny Garcia and Carrie Benavidez and a new member that had just moved to El Campo, Ray Brown ,and took them to Conference in Bay City with us. They had a dinner at 5:30pm because most members have to drive so far to get there and the Preisthood leaders had a session at 4:00 pm.

The 7:00 pm adult session started with a wonderful talk by President Saylin (Our mission President). He talked about how he is a " California Boy" so he doesn't know alot about farming. But "it looks like you Texans know quite a bit"....laughter!! Anyway, he talked about the parable of the 'yoke' and the 'sheaves and the tares and the garner', and how, after he had studied up on the meanings of all those farming terms, he understood the parable better. It was a good talk!! We were reorganizing the Stake Presidency so we had two General Authorities with us. Pres. Snow of the Presidency of the Seventy, and Elder Villlereal. Both were wonderful speakers. Anyway, again on Sunday we had another meeting where the new Stake Presidency was announced. We were invited to dinner at the Mission Home. So, at 4pm we arrived at the Mission Home and had the most fun time!!! Sometimes, the President seems sort of stern...and I haven't figured out if he has a funny side or not!! Well, he does!!! And his 6 children are amazing!! They were acting just like regular, wild, kids on a Sunday afternoon!! It was a wonderful afternoon...in fact, we didn't go home until 7:30pm.

Our time here has been so full of changes!! We've had the change of (1) the mission president, and (2) the branch president and (3) the Stake president!! Everyone has changed!! But, it's all good!! We've changed, too! We are more 'full of the spirit', and, of course, we hope we can keep those same, great feelings when we go home. We're smarter on the gospel, because we have studied so much. And, we seem to be more 'mellow'...because we live in such close quarters, and we are TOGETHER all the time...it seems a good idea to be 'mellow'!!

Yesterday, we helped a man "get rid of the devil" ./...the devil was telling him to hurt himself, and to leave his family....his wife was worried. Her husband wouldn't listen to any family member, so she called us. We talked and talked, and listened and encouraged. Earl gave him a blessing and his house a blessing. He seemed much better when we left. We're going over today to check on him.

Never a dull moment!!!
Till next time....Elder and Sister Carter

Exciting Sunday

We had a very exciting day on Sunday. We had three people baptized.
First there was Johnny Garcia, he is Carrie Benavetes,s future husband. When we first visited Carrie and Johnny, Carrie was a member but inactive. After we visited they came to church the next Sunday, but the next two Sundays they did not come. So we visited them again and after the visit Jen said I really think she wants to go to church, had the feeling she really wanted to go to church but there must be some reason it is not happening.
So we visited them again and ask them if there was something keeping them from church, they explained that Johnny drive from El Campo to Wharton every week day for work, so as tight as their money was they did not have the gas to go to church, the time they came the tank was almost all the way emty and they prayed that they would make it home and they did.
When we found that the thing keeping them from church was so easily fix, we started giving then a few dollars every week for gas to come to church, they have not missed since then.
When Johnny first started coming to church he would bring his bible and stay for all three hours, we made sure he got a Book of Mormon with a scriture chain in it that had all the important scriptures high light that would be important for an investigator to read.
After his first two or three times at church I ask him if he would be willing to be taught, he said he would so we told Elder Smith and Elder Schwarz to stop by and see them.
Johnny progressed very quick and he was getting to the point when he had been taught enough to be baptized, but their the problem that even though he and Carrie needed to be married they had been living together.
By this time Elder Smith had been replaced by Elder Cameron, and he and Elder Schwarz decided to challenge them to live apart until they got married, they accepted the challenge and that was that.
We took him and Carrie to the mission home fireside tyhe night of his baptism, they really enjoyed it..
All for now...We love you all, Elder and Sister Carter

Photos......labels??

We understand that the "titles" for the pictures did not go through on our last Blog. She introduced herself, and told us her story of inactivity in the church, and returning to the church a few years ago. It was very inspiring!! (Bishop Shearer...feel free to share this with everyone!!)
Her name is Sister Laughman, and she left the church when she was about 19 years old, because she wanted "freedom". There were just too many resrictions. Well, 12 years before she returned, she and her non-member husband allowed the Home Teachers to visit them. A Brother Ruggles was assigned to them. Well, in 12 years, he never missed a month and he brought her family 144 loaves of home baked bread!! About half way through this time, Bro. Ruggles daughter was being baptized and she accepted the invitation to attend the baptism. When she was at church, she began to feel the spirit, and she remembered her feelings toward church when she was a child. Awhile after this, she was sitting on her porch swing, and her husband was working in the yard; he came up to sit down and relax for a minute, and she was overcome with guilt, so she told her husband, "I need to tell you something." She told him that she had been paying tithing on half his income, because she felt like she needed to pay tithing and she felt bad that he didn't know about it. He turned to her and said, "Go ahead and pay on all of my income." She says that when she finally returned, she was "weighted down with chains of guilt and sin and bad habits". She was so glad for Bishops court and for the Atonement, and that, once she was fully returned...she finally felt what "freedom" really was. As a result of this Home Teacher's faithfulness and LOVE for her, she came back, her husband joined the church, her sister came back, her daughter joined the church..... It was SO inspiring!! We didn't do a thing, but we would not have heard her story if we would not have had Missionary Tags!!
We have a Pioneer Celebration today....all outdoors, water games.............and it's supposed to rain...maybe!! That's how Texas is!!!
We are having a baptism next Sunday...Jonathan Rodriguez, who is 12 years old, but has not been baptised because of his parents inactivity the last few years. They returned, so Jonathan has been doing all those young people's activities, and the Elders have taught him, to be sure he understands. He's a great kid!!
We've challenged the Escamilla Family to come to church tomorrow!!! We'll see!!
We've been really good. We went out to ElCampo to help a family move in to the house they have rented. The family is from St. George, Utah. The dad builds and flies, and sells "ultra-light" planes. Anyway, we were all helping, maybe only one big piece of furniture left and a few boxes, and it POURED DOWN RAIN...LIGHTNING.....BUCKETS OF RAIN....... We finally left....but someone stayed to finish that last little bit, because we went by just a bit ago and the U-haul was gone. The family wasn't home.
Anyway...we are really good!! Lots of Love to all...Elder and Sister Carter

July Missionary Update

We have had some adventures just lately!! First, we started working in Bay City one day a week. Same job, supporting the members, and visiting the less active. One of the families we visited was the Jarmin's. They are a young couple with an 18 month old son. Michael (nickname is 'Moe') works for the Bay City Police Dept. and last Sept. Moe was working traffic control and was involved in a terrible accident. Basically, a semi-truck ran into the back of some 'stopped' cars and trucks, and became airborne and landed on Moe, who was trying to run away from the whole event, and drug him the truck, they life-flighted him to a hospital in Houston, they told his wife to let them "pull the plug" because he wasn't going to make it. She wouldn't. They said "he won't last a week". He was in a coma for a month. He lasted a week, and they told her to pull the plug because he would be a vegetable. She said, no. He had 15+ operations during the time he was in the coma. Burns, and skingrafts on one arm. Broken arm , that now has a steel plate in it on the other arm. Broken fingers...he'll have to have joint replacements on two fingers!! Because of the trauma to his head, he's still working on memory and some brain damage. Then there is his leg....it was filleted from the ankle to the hip on the inside of his leg. They put it back together....his calf muscle is laying on his knee joint to protect it..... they said he would never walk again...he's walking....well, he'll only walk with a walker.....he's walking with a cane, and inside his house, without a cane. He has a "cage" drilled into the bones on either side of his knee. This has been there for awhile....his leg wouldn't go straight, so every night his wife would give him pain pills, then turns the screw to straighten his leg. His leg is straight, and his heel can touch the ground. Who knows what's next!!! They have endured all of this with a positive attitude. Both Moe and Sondra have been through a really difficult time!! The Police Dept. had to let him go, as the insurance company only insures an employee who has been on the force for 12 months or more. Moe had been there for 10 months. His job, or any desk job is waiting for him as soon as he is able to do it. They are amazing!! Moe's job around the house is to do the dishes.....so I gave him one of my handmade dishclothes to help him!!!
We've been working with a wonderful young couplle...Carrie Benevidez and Johnny Garcia. She has three young boys, and Jennifer just felt that they wanted to go to church. So we started visiting a little more, and then we challenged them to attend church every week. Well, they have been coming. Johnny isn't a member, but is taking the lessons with the young Elders. Now, he tells us that his Mom and his sister want to come to church. They are getting married on Sept. 19 by our new Branch President!!
Another great family is the Rodriguez's. Joel and Marcia. They are in their 50's and had gone inactive because of some extended family problems that had discouraged them alot. Well, we began going with the young Elders (Marcia only speaks a little english) and now they are coming regularly, and their youngest son, Jonathan, is coming to YM/YW and just spent a week at Scout Camp.
We got a new Mission President the first of this month. We met he and his wife, and their 6 children on the 4th of July. They are AWESOME!!
We're doing our best, and enjoying the HOT Texas summer!!
Hope all of you are good, too.
Sincerely, Elder and Sister Carter
Texas Houston South Mission
